St. John's Episcopal church, designed by architect David Hoadley, was constructed
on the Green in 1795, replacing St. James' church which had been located on
the corner of Willow and West Main Streets. St. John's was consecrated on November
1, 1797. Fortune was baptized in St. John's on December 20 of that same year.
