The first school in Waterbury for girls as well as boys was constructed on the south side of the Green in 1785. Girls met for class on the first floor, boys on the second. Within a few years, however, the lower floor had become a clockmaker's shop. By 1800, the school house had been moved down West Main Street, where it became the West Centre District school.
