Leavenworth Homesite

Mark Leavenworth became the pastor of Waterbury’s Congregational church in 1740 and lived on the north side of the Green. He owned two slaves, Peg and Phillis, in the 1790s. Peg died in 1806. In 1810, Leavenworth's house was inherited by Dr. Edward Field, who had married into the family.

Field tore down the Leavenworth home in 1816, replacing it with the house and office seen in this photograph. Phillis continued to work as a slave, and then as a servant, for Field until her death in 1821.
