Today, Bank and South Main Streets converge just before reaching the Green. South Main Street, however, was not opened up until the 1800s. In Fortune's era, Bank Street was a single lane. A gate allowed passage through the Common Fence, making the lane the primary access south. It was known as the "road to Beaver Meadows" and the "road to Judds Meadows."
