Castor Freeman had been enslaved by Michael Todd of
New Haven, and moved to the area of Waterbury known as
Westbury sometime before the Revolutionary War. Freeman
enlisted in the Continental Army in 1777, serving as a
private in Capt. Theophilus Munsons Company, with
the understanding that he would be paid a salary by Waterbury
as a resident of Westbury. In 1780, however, Westbury
became the separate town of Watertown. Several soldiers,
including Castor Freeman, were forced to sue Waterbury
and Watertown for back wages owed to them for their service
in the army.
